A Quality Pillow in Not an Option
The average person spends 24 years of their entire life with their head on a pillow. The quality of this sleep could be beneficial or detrimental to overall health depending on a number of crucial factors. One of the major factors is the pillow. A pillow supports your head during sleep. It therefore has an important role to play in your spinal health. As we age our spines become increasingly more sensitive and it is so important to look after them. With regard to pillows, this can be done in three ways:
- Choose a Quality Pillow – The market is full of cheap pillows and with so much on the shopping list, it is too easy to neglect this important item. Search for a pillow with a medical stamp of approval. This generally means that it has some or other properties that have been designed by practitioners or tested for optimal use. You can also look for a down pillow that complements the firmness of your mattress, and choose pillows that allow for adjustment, keep the spine in natural alignment, have the ability to fit the unique contour of the user and are able to support the different sleeping positions unique to your sleep patterns. Check for pillows that are neither too hard nor to soft as a firm balance is what is generally required. Pillows that are hypoallergenic are also great for eliminating issues related to possible skin and sinus irritations. Also consider the warrantee and technical quality of the pillow as you want one that can offer the longest possible service time.
- Know how to Use Pillows to compliment your Body Type – The shape of your body and the sleeping position you assume the most can easily indicate what type of pillow you need. It is also an indicator of the number of pillows that is healthy for you. We may have specific habits that we are not aware are in actual fact bad for us. It is best consult your local nurse or GP about their opinion on what type and number of pillows would best suit you.
- Know When To Change Your Pillow – As a pillow is in use for an average of 8 hours a day, it needs regular washing. Washing shortens the life of the pillow and although we may grow attached to them, it is hygienic and healthy to change your pillows completely at least once a year.
The best investment you can make in your future health is a quality pillow.
