Bed Linen Cleanliness

There are many good reasons to look after your bed linen. Investing in a comprehensive and quality set can be very expensive and so making it last is important. Hygiene of the bed is a crucial element overall cleanliness since so much time is spent in bed. It is also a static place for extended periods of time and so is an ideal breeding ground for germs. This can all be controlled with a little extra care.

5 Steps to Keeping Bed Linen Free from dust and bacteria

  1. Regular Washing – You don’t want to wash too much as your linen will fade and possibly look older that what it is. You also however cannot allow linen to be used for long periods without putting it through a wash. Summer is the ideal time to wash more as body heat and sweat add to the buildup of dirt in your linen. A bed that has not been slept in for a week should have linen changed before being slept in as this linen has gathered microbes and dust that can cause irritation.
  2. Highest Temperature Drying – Heat has a good ability to kill germs and expel static dust. Most linen does not take well to machine generated heat so be sure to check the labels. The sun is a powerful alternative although too much sun can cause fading and even alter the quality of the fabric over time.
  3. Linen Spray – There are many wonderful odors and both chemical and natural options on the linen spray shelf. Whilst used alone, these are not enough to ensure good hygiene – they can help to keep bacteria out and keep a fresh smell but the true dirt will continue to collect.
  4. Mattress and Pillow Cleanliness – Keeping the bed linen clean is an important aspect that means nothing if the actual pillow and mattress are contaminated or dirty. Within minutes, the bed linen will be unclean if it is to house something that has not undergone cleaning. The synthetic fibers and materials that pillows and mattresses are made out of mean that there is a lot of space for bacteria. These items should be aired out regularly, heat up in the sun and we washed with a strong detergent from time to time.
  5. Household Cleanliness – Cleaning in the corners, sweeping, wiping marks, clearing dust and keeping a watch on things like spiders and flees is something that must be done on a regular basis in any home. By keeping the areas around a bed clean, linen can certainly be kept cleaner for longer.
Your bed linen is the closest thing that you will sleep with so best keep it fresh and free from unwanted crawlies.
