Queen Size Beds are Making History

10,000 years ago, in the Neolithic period, people began sleeping on primitive beds of a very simple kind and today we have a vast a array from water beds to the much loved queen size bed. The history of the bed as we currently know it is quite interesting when one considers that sleeping is something common to all cultures and times.

In 3400 BCE, Egyptian pharaohs discover the benefits of raising a pallet off the earth. King Tutankahmen had a bed of ebony and gold. Common people slept on palm bows heaped in the corner of their home.

The Roman Empire is responsible for the first luxury bed. Often decorated with gold, silver or bronze, these beds featured mattresses stuffed with reeds, hay, wool or feathers.

Today, after years of engineering and trial, we have many bed types to choose from the queen size bed is however the most popular bed of choice throughout the western world.

A Queen Size Bed can fit in a normal room and it provides a bit more space than the Full or Double bed without occupying much more of the floor space.
  • In comparison to Twin bed, they are 21" wider and 5" longer.
  • In comparison to Double size bed, they are 6" wider and 5" longer.
It often happens that a couple purchases a bed but then they realize that it is not the right one and that they had not taken the dimensions into consideration. They then have no option other than squeezing themselves into a full size bed.

The extra length and width definitely makes a difference in obtaining a good night’s sleep but still in comparison to twin bed accommodating two adults, each adult person gets 9" lesser width in the case of a Queen size bed. It fits in well in smaller master bedrooms and guest rooms. They are popular as in general their dimensions are sufficient to most people.

It was only in 1865 that the first coil spring construction for bedding was patented. Perhaps we should pause to consider what life was like before spacious and medically optimized mattresses. The queen size bed was once a dream of luxury, but it is now a common part of our daily lives.
